EVALUATION REQUIREMENTS

1. GENERAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION RULES

a. The required number of pieces is specified at each Level in the syllabus. The pieces should be contrasting: from different musical periods or different musical styles, such as tempo and character; and preferably, but not required, from different keys. If the pieces are in the same key, two different keys for scales and arpeggios must be played.

b. One of the solos selected for the evaluation must be from that Level in the syllabus. The other solo(s) may be from the enrolled Level, a neighboring Level, or be a piece not listed in the syllabus but on a comparable Level. For Advanced and Advanced Panel levels, only Advanced repertoire or equally difficult repertoire is acceptable

c. One of the pieces must be memorized. In Levels I through VI, the memorized piece must be from the respective Level listed in the syllabus. In Levels VII through Advanced, either piece may be memorized.

d Taped accompaniment is acceptable only if the student is not applying for Convention. The student must bring a working tape recorder to the evaluation.

e. Only one movement of a concerto or sonata should be played. If two short, consecutive movements are played, they are counted as one piece.

f Only one sonata may be played for each evaluation. The other selection(s) must be a solo piece or concerto. All solo sonatas, unaccompanied or with accompaniment, from the Baroque period must be memorized. Sonatas from the Classical period to the present are considered ensembles and may be played with music. They may be performed on the Ensemble Recital at Convention as well as on the Festival or Theme Recitals. A professional pianist is acceptable for Convention Recitals when students perform either solo or ensemble literature for strings and piano.

g. When applying for Convention recitals, ALL pieces must be memorized, except the above mentioned sonatas. Read all requirements on the Convention forms each year. There may be changes from the previous year.

h. Adult students may apply for Convention programs, excluding Panel (see p 71, violin or p 105, viola)

i. Scale and arpeggio requirements are listed at each Level in the syllabus and must be followed carefully. All scales and arpeggios must be memorized.

j. Regular etudes and studies should be two minutes long. Double-stop etudes should be one minute long. They should be timed before the evaluation. It is not required to have a copy of the etude(s) for the evaluator, but it is recommended. Evaluation etudes must be taken from the required etude books listed at each level in the syllabus and need not to be memorized. Other etudes from the supplementary list are not to be performed for CM.

k. Students must bring an original, published copy of the music to the evaluation. When music is not memorized, it is highly recommended that students provide a second copy (not photocopy) for the evaluator whenever possible. The teacher should note that the evaluator may not be able to write with as much detail if a second copy is not provided.

1. No photocopies are allowed in the evaluation. The CM policy states:

“Photocopies may be used only in the following situations: to facilitate a page turn, or for out-of-print material. Confirmed out-of-print material must be accompanied by written permission from the publisher.”

m. Measure numbers must be written down the left side of the page of all pieces for the evaluator.

                   n. Sight-reading material will not be posted outside the evaluation room. The student is permitted 30                          seconds in the evaluation room for looking at the material prior to performing it..

                  o. Parents or teachers may not be present in the same room as their child or student during Branch                        evaluations unless accompanying, and then only for that part of the evaluation.

          2. SPECIFIC LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

Scale and music requirements are listed at each level beginning on page 28 for violin and page 75 for viola. Although publishers are suggested for all music, many other editions may be used if available.

NOTE: Repertoire rules for each level must be stringently followed in order for the student is too pass that level

3. FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC EXAM

The Fundamentals of Music Exam consists of a written Theory and vocabulary section, and ear training, using a tape recorder.

a. The Theory portion of the String Evaluations is called “FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC” because it is basically pre-Theory information and does not encompass the larger area of regular Theory. The questions chosen for this exam deal with the basic information that all string players of various levels and ages should know.

b. The Preparatory Level will have no written or oral exam, and no ear-training.

c. Levels I and II will have an oral exam of study questions and vocabulary words given by the evaluator. Teachers are to photocopy the questions and words from the syllabus for Levels I and II and put them in each student’s CM evaluation sheet with the expected answers provided by the teacher. No ear-training is required.

d. Level III will have a written Fundamentals of Music exam consisting of the questions listed at Level III and vocabulary words from Levels I, II, and III. No ear-training is required.

e. Levels IV through Advanced will have a written Fundamentals of Music exam with an ear- training exam using tapes.

f. The vocabulary list for all levels is on pages 11-17 and the Fundamental of Music Study Guides for all levels are on pages 18-27. Teachers are encouraged to photocopy both the study guide and vocabulary list for their students. Students must pass 70% of the Fundamentals of Music exam in order to receive a Certificate. Students who pass the Advanced exam by 90% or more are exempt from taking it in subsequent years. Teachers must photocopy the front of the Advanced exam and give it to the Branch CM Chair for verification of the 90% score and for the State records.

4. PRELIMINARY PANEL EVALUATION

See Advanced Level for Preliminary Panel requirements. Also see “Panel Pamphlet” for complete information. Get the pamphlet from your Branch CM Chair or State Office.

5. STATE PANEL AUDITIONS

State Panel Audition requirements are listed at the Advanced Level.
